SAINT'S CORNER

St. Ambrose
December 7

St. Ambrose was born in 340 at Trier, a city in present-day Germany. His father was a high-level administrator working for the Roman emperor. His father died when Ambrose was a small boy, and his mother moved to Rome, where Ambrose received an excellent education. He became a lawyer and was named governor of two provinces with his residence at Milan, Italy. In the year 374 he was made bishop of Milan when the bishop of Milan had died. He was chosen by public acclamation. It is said that Ambrose tried his best to avoid this but in the end he was gently but firmly persuaded to do so by the emperor.

Ambrose gave up his worldly possessions and began to live a life of simplicity, maintaining a vigorous schedule of prayer, including the daily Eucharist and night vigils. He made it easy for his people to see and speak to him at any time and he became a popular bishop as he had been a popular governor.

Ambrose had indomitable courage and constancy in resisting evil. That is why he was drawn into controversies with the Emperor and royal court over the rights of the Church and the morality of the Emperor’s official actions. After the Emperor had ordered a heinous massacre of his opponents, for example, Ambrose refused him entry into the cathedral until he publicly repented. The courage of St. Ambrose is for us to imitate. It is easy for us to lack courage when we face “big shots” or “VIPs”.

Besides the politics of his office, St. Ambrose was a great preacher. His preaching brought many to conversion and was instrumental in the conversion of St. Augustine. Ambrose died in the year 397.
